Australian pilots have voiced grave
concerns for their job security, following Jetstar's move to employ pilots
under the controversial 457 visa scheme. Jetstar has announced 300 pilots are
needed to subsist the company's future expansions. However, almost one third
of those pilots could come from the United Kingdom, South Africa and the United
States. Australian and International Pilots Association (AIPA) general manager
Peter Somerville said Jetstar has chosen to ignore a Memorandum of Understanding
(MoU) signed in 2004, which allowed Jetstar to use highly skilled Australian
pilots in time of rapid growth. more...
Unions want equal conditions for foreign
workers

Australia's most powerful unions will use a review of the temporary skilled migration
program to campaign for foreign workers to have access to collective agreements.
They will also seek guarantees of market wages for workers on 457 visas and tough
requirements for bosses to prove skilled jobs can't be filled locally. more...

specifies the definitions of regional Australia and seasonal work to encourage
people on Working Holiday Visas to live and work in regional Australia and
